Rückblick auf das 27. Schellerhauer Naturschutzpraktikum

Zu den Reflexionen der Teilnehmer geht es hier.
Am 27. Schellerhauer Naturschutzpraktikum nahmen 17 Studenten und andere interessierte Jugendliche teil. Mehrere kurzfristige Absagen und unangekündigte Nicht-Anreisen reduzierten die Zahl unter die für das Praktikum geltende Höchstgrenze von 20 Teilnehmern.
Organisiert und betreut wurde der Workshop von drei bis vier praxiserfahrenen Mitgliedern/Unterstützern der Grünen Liga Osterzgebirge. Die Praktikumsteilnehmer studieren an an folgenden Hochschulen:
- TU Dresden (“Tropical Forestry”, “Raumentwicklung und Ressourcenmanagement”)
- TU Berlin (“Ökologie und Umweltplanung”)
- Humboldt-Universität Berlin (“Integrated Natural Ressource Management”)
- Hochschule Zittau/Görlitz (“Ökologie und Umweltschutz”)
- Universität Jena (“Evolution, Ecology, Systematics”; “Biologie”)
- Karlsuniversität Prag (“Biologie”)
- Comenius-Universität Bratislava (“Naturschutz”, “Biologie”)
- University of Copenhagen (“Sustainable Tropical Forestry”)
- Manchester Metropolitan University (“Environmental Science”)
Die Studentinnen und Studenten brachten aus ihren sehr unterschiedlichen Heimatgebieten (verschiedene Regionen Deutschlands + vier europäische und sechs außereuropäische Länder) ein außerordentlich breites Spektrum an Erfahrungen und Perspektiven ein. Beeindruckend war das große Engagement, mit der sich alle Teilnehmer sowohl an den praktischen (für die meisten ungewohnten, anstrengenden) Arbeiten als auch an den lebhaften Diskussionen beteiligten. Fast alle bereicherten mit einer Kurzpräsentation zu Natur- und Umweltproblemen ihrer Heimatregion die innerhalb des Praktikums behandelte Naturschutz-Themenpalette und weiteten damit den Blick auf die Vielfalt der aktuellen Herausforderungen. Arbeitssprache war Englisch.
Die Grüne Liga Osterzgebirge verbindet mit dem Schellerhauer Naturschutzpraktikum vor allem folgende Arbeits- und Bildungsziele:
- Umsetzung aufwendiger, manueller Biotoppflege- und Habitatgestaltungsmaßnahmen mit engagierten jungen Menschen (Tätigkeiten, für die in der Region oft die personellen Kapazitäten fehlen);
- Vermittlung von Kenntnissen und Fertigkeiten der Naturschutzpraxis für künftige potentielle Entscheidungsträger in Behörden, Planungsbüros oder akademischen Bereichen (“… selbst die Erfahrung machen, wie mühevoll all das sein kann, was sich auf dem Papier/am Computer so leicht formulieren lässt …”);
- jungen Menschen die Natur der Region Ost-Erzgebirge nahebringen, um die Unterstützung (praktisch wie ideell) für die Naturschutzarbeit in der Region nachhaltig zu sichern (Praktikumsteilnehmer kommen z.B. später mitunter auch zu weiteren Naturschutzeinsätzen) – Netzwerkbildung
Mindestens genauso wichtig sind jedoch auch die ökologischen Denkansätze der jungen Menschen, die so manche der tradierten Naturschutzpraktiken kritisch hinterfragen. Angesichts der Überalterung der meisten lokalen Naturschutzakteure einerseits und der enormen neuen globalen Herausforderungen (Klimaextreme, Landnutzungswandel, Neobiota …) andererseits sind derartige Debatten zwischen engagierten Menschen unterschiedlicher Erfahrungshorizonte und Erwartungshaltungen wichtiger denn je.
The 27th Schellerhauer Conservation Training was attended by 17 students and other interested youth. Several last-minute cancellations and unannounced no-shows reduced the number below the maximum limit of 20 participants for the internship.
The workshop was organized and supervised by three to four members/supporters of the Grüne Liga Osterzgebirge with practical experience. The training participants study at the following universities:

The students brought an extraordinarily broad spectrum of experiences and perspectives from their very different home areas (various regions of Germany + four European and six non-European countries). Impressive was the great commitment with which all participants took part both in the practical (for most of them: unfamiliar, strenuous) work and in the lively discussions. Almost all of them enriched the spectrum of nature conservation topics dealt with during the internship with a short presentation on nature and environmental problems in their home region, thus broadening the view of the diversity of current challenges. Working language was English.
The Grüne Liga Osterzgebirge connects with the Schellerhauer nature conservation internship above all the following work and educational goals:
Implementation of elaborate, manual biotope maintenance and habitat design measures with committed young people (activities for which the region often lacks the personnel capacities);
Imparting knowledge and skills of nature conservation practice to future potential decision-makers in authorities, planning offices or academic fields (“… experience for yourself how laborious all that can be so easily formulated on paper/computer …”);
to introduce young people to the nature of the Eastern Erzgebirge region in order to sustainably secure support (practical as well as non-material) for nature conservation work in the region (e.g. internship participants sometimes come to further nature conservation work later on) – network building.
At least as important, however, are the ecological approaches of the young people, who critically question some of the traditional conservation practices. Given the aging of most local conservation actors on the one hand and the enormous new global challenges (climate extremes, land use change, neobiota …) on the other, such debates between committed people of different horizons of experience and expectations are more important than ever.

Inhalte/Bildungsziele: Landschaftsgenese Ost-Erzgebirge (Geologie, Landnutzungsgeschichte); Bergwiesen und Steinrücken samt typischer/gefährdeter Pflanzenarten; Ökosystemwandel durch Klimaveränderungen, Eutrophierung und Säureeinträge; Vergleich historische Landnutzung – heutige Naturschutzpraxis
abends Einführungsvortrag “Biodiversity in Eastern Ore Mountains”
Saturday, 30.7.22: Excursion mining area Altenberg + visit mountain meadow exhibition museum castle Lauenstein (the actually planned excursion to the NSG Geisingberg could not be carried out because of the forest access ban); Contents/educational goals: Landscape genesis of the Eastern Ore Mountains (geology, history of land use); mountain meadows and stone ridges including typical/endangered plant species; ecosystem change due to climate change, eutrophication and acid deposition; comparison of historical land use – today’s nature conservation practice; evening introductory lecture “Biodiversity in Eastern Ore Mountains”.
Sonntag, 31.7.22: Wanderexkursion Schellerhau – Galgenteich – Kahleberg – Zinnwald (wegen Waldbetretungsverbots ebenfalls nur eingeschränkt möglich, NSG Georgenfelder Hochmoor geschlossen)
Inhalte/Bildungsziele: Vorstellung NSG Weißeritzwiesen und Diskussion möglicher Entwicklungsstrategien; Wald- und Forstgeschichte; Waldschäden; Klima und Klimawandel; Fließ- und Standgewässer; Moore und Moorrenaturierung; Birkhuhn; Natura 2000; Konfliktfelder Naturschutz – Forstwirtschaft – Tourismus

Montag, 1.8.22: praktische Wiesenarbeiten im NSG Schellerhauer Weißeritzwiesen
Inhalte/Bildungsziele: Einweisung in verschiedene Mähtechnik (Handsense, Freischneider, Einachsmäher) + eigene Handhabung; körperlich anstrengende Arbeit insb. bei der Beräumung des Nasswiesen-/ Zwischenmoorbereiches; Vorstellung gefährdeter Pflanzenarten; Problematik der Eutrophierung und Diskussion von Handlungsoptionen

Monday, 1.8.22: practical meadow work in the Schellerhauer Weißeritzwiesen NSG; Contents/educational goals: Instruction in different mowing techniques (hand scythe, brush cutter, single-axle mower) + own handling; physically strenuous work especially in clearing the wet meadow/intermediate moor area; presentation of endangered plant species; problem of eutrophication and discussion of options for action; in the evening presentations of the participants about nature protection topics/environmental problems of their home regions
Dienstag, 2.8.22: Arbeiten im Botanischer Garten Schellerhau, zuvor kurze Gartenführung
Inhalte/Bildungsziele: Vorstellung typischer Biotope und Arten; Maßnahmen des ex-situ-Artenschutzes; Wechselwirkungen zwischen Tourismus und Naturschutz; Mahd (Handsense) des Bergwiesenbiotopes; Begrenzung der Ausbreitung potentiell invasiver Arten

Mittwoch, 3.8.22: Gehölz-Naturschutz im Botanischen Garten (Epiphytenseminar mit Dr. Sebastian Dittrich, praktische Baumpflege mit Andreas Frieseke) + praktische Wiesenarbeiten im FND Himmelsleiter
Inhalte/Bildungsziele: Bedeutung alter Gehölze u.a. als Lebensräume von epiphytischen Organismen, Bioindikation durch Moose und Flechten; Grundlagen praktischer Baumpflege; Kooperationen von Naturschutzakteuren; körperlich anstrengende Arbeit bei der Beräumung des Steilhangbereichs;

Wednesday, 3.8.22: Nature conservation of trees and woody plants in the Botanical Garden (epiphyte seminar with Dr. Sebastian Dittrich, practical tree care with Andreas Frieseke) + practical meadow work in the FND Himmelsleiter; Contents/educational goals: Importance of old woody plants among others as habitats of epiphytic organisms, bioindication by mosses and lichens; basics of practical tree care; cooperation of nature conservation actors; physically demanding work in clearing the steep slope area; in the evening presentations of the participants about nature protection topics/environmental problems of their home regions
Donnerstag, 4.8.22: Habitatgestaltung im Wald: Optimierung Birkhuhn-Balzplatz (Einweisung und Diskussionen mit Revierförster Denny Werner)
Inhalte/Bildungsziele: Lebensraumvielfalt im Wald einschl. Offenland-Biotopen; Artenschutz Birkhuhn u.a. Tiere; (körperlich anstrengende) Arbeiten zur Balz- und Brutraum-Gestaltung
nachmittags Workshop zum Themenkomplex, wie erfolgreiches (ehrenamtliches) Naturschutzengagement auf lokaler/regionaler Ebene organisiert werden kann; abends Abschluss-Diskussionsrunde, bei der die Teilnehmer durchweg positives Fazit zogen
Thursday, 4.8.22: Forest habitat creation: optimizing black grouse courtship habitat (briefing and discussion with district forester Denny Werner); Content/Educational Objectives: Habitat diversity in the forest incl. open land biotopes; species protection of black grouse and other animals; (physically strenuous) work for courtship and breeding habitat design; In the afternoon, workshop on how to organize successful (voluntary) nature conservation activities at local/regional level; in the evening, final discussion circle, where the participants all gave positive feedback.
Freitag, 5.8.22: Wanderexkursion Schellerhau – Bärenfels – Pöbeltal – Schmiedeberg (einschl. Führung durch Sachsenforst-Mitarbeiter Kristina Funke im Forstamt Bärenfels und NSG Hofehübel)
Inhalte/Bildungsziele: Naturgemäße Waldwirtschaft versus Fichtenforsten am Beispiel Forstamt Bärenfels (Herrmann Krutzsch); naturnahe Waldgesellschaften: Fichten-Tannen-Buchenwald; Waldschäden durch neuartige Krankheiten (Ulmen, Eschen) und NOx/Ozon (Buchen); Naturschutz im Wald – Schnittmengen und Konflikte mit forstlicher Nutzung; Klimawandel und Klimaextreme, technische (HRB) und naturschutzgerechte Klimaanpassungsmaßnahmen; Abschlussdiskussion von Naturschutzstrategien im Weißtannenbestand Pöbeltal

Friday, 5.8.22: Hiking excursion Schellerhau – Bärenfels – Pöbeltal – Schmiedeberg (incl. guided tour by Sachsenforst employee Kristina Funke in the forestry office Bärenfels and NSG Hofehübel); Contents/Educational Objectives: Natural forestry versus spruce forestry using the example of the Bärenfels forestry office (Herrmann Krutzsch); near-natural forest communities: Spruce-fir-beech forest; forest damage due to novel diseases (elms, ash trees) and NOx/ozone (beech trees); nature conservation in forests – intersections and conflicts with forestry use; climate change and climate extremes, technical (HRB) and nature conservation climate adaptation measures; final discussion of nature conservation strategies in the silver fir stand Pöbeltal; End of the internship week and departure of the participants from Schmiedeberg around 4 p.m..
Das 27. Schellerhauer Naturschutzpraktikum war geprägt von engagierter, gemeinsamer Arbeit aller Teilnehmer, einer intensiven, fruchtbaren Diskussionskultur und harmonischer Kooperation. Sowohl die Studenten, als auch die Organisatoren konnten wertvolle Denkanregungen aufnehmen.
The 27th Schellerhauer Nature Conservation Practicum was characterized by committed, joint work of all participants, an intensive, fruitful discussion culture and harmonious cooperation. Both the students and the organizers were able to absorb valuable inspiration for thinking.
